The new leader of Germany’s ruling Christian Democrat Party Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and designated successor to Chancellor Angela Merkel has signalled she will follow in goose-step with her predecessor after calling for a full-fledged EU army.

In a speech in Brussels to outline a key CDU party campaign theme with European Parliament elections coming up in May, Karrenbauer said the EU will have to build its own military to compete with the destabilising leaders of Russia, China and the US.

An EU army is firmly in the works having been pledged in the Lisbon Treaty and taken a huge step closer in December 2017 with the signing by most member states, including Ireland, of PESCO (Permanent Structured Cooperation Agreement). This was major step forward in the amalgamation of the EU states individual militaries.

In recent months French President Emmanuel Macron along with Chancellor Merkel and the EU Commission president Jean Claude Junker have all insisted that an EU will soon become a reality.
