Animal rights groups outraged after Government hire shooters to kill deer at Dublin’s Phoenix Park

Animal rights activists have slammed the Government after a number of deer were killed in the Phoenix Park on Wednesday.

The widespread outrage comes after the Office of Public Works (OPW) ordered the killing of 34 deer in the park as part of what they call a ‘sustainable management’ programme.

Although the OPW have defended their decision to kill the deer, animals rights groups have described the killings as barbaric and unjustified.

However the OPW say the cull was required in order to maintain control of the overall population and therefore cut-out any potential issues they may cause.

The OPW say an over population deer could potentially lead to further car accidents on the roads and even the spread of specific diseases.

But Animal Rights groups say the killing of the deer especially in front of other deers was completely unacceptable as it was cruel.

They also say the move was unjustified and accused the Government of selling out by farming out the deer in order to make more money.

Groups also argued that there is a more humane approach that involves an alternative contraceptive that would stop the overall population growth.
