Anti-government protests are continuing in Hong Kong with demonstrators having seized the territories parliament building and hoisting signs and some British colonial flags in a rebuke to move the territory closer to mainland China’s communist dictatorship.

Millions of Hong Kong citizens have taken the streets in recent weeks in protest against a proposed extradition bill that would see citizens of the island city extradited to China for acts deemed criminal by Beijing.

The vast majority of Hong Kong’s population is extremely concerned and opposed to the semi-autonomous territory coming under the increasing control of the Chinese Communist party Politburo.

Meanwhile, legislators have pleaded with demonstrators to cease their protests and have said that they have stopped all work on extradition bill amendments which would now lapse into next July.

Hong Kong was returned to Chinese territorial control from the UK in 1997 but the territory is set to retain much of its autonomy for some years to come but Beijing is increasingly anxious to bring the metropolis fully under its control.
