Violence erupted on the streets of Naples on Friday night as hundreds of locals gathered to protest the region’s new lockdown measures.

On Friday, after recording a spike in Covid cases, the government of Campania announced they were planning a 40 day lockdown on the southern Italian region. This comes as 2280 cases were found, a 50% increase from 1541 the day before according to Deutsche Welle.

Gathering at the Campania government offices in the regional capital Naples, some protestors clashed with police. DW reports that projectiles were thrown at officers, while several bins were set on fire during clashes that continued into the early hours of Saturday morning.

Two people have been arrested and two police officers suffered mild injuries. Meanwhile the Covid situation across Italy is rapidly deteriorating, sparking fears of a second national lockdown. The country has recorded half a million cases and 37,000 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
