Anti-terror Garda officers recovered AK47s, detonators, assault rifles and mortars in an investigation into dissident republicans.

Garda launched the search following the arrest of a 43-year-old man in the Scotstown area of Co Monaghan last Wednesday. The man, named locally as Jim Smyth, was charged with IRA membership at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin on Saturday evening.

The arms dump recovered at the scene contained AK47s, detonators, detonating cord and components for making improvised explosive devices.

Those involved in the searches included the anti-terror division, the special detective unit, dog handlers and its armed emergency response unit as well as local officers. The exact quantity of arms recovered has yet to be revealed by Gardai as searches continue.
