Anxiety among Irish people as calls for restrictions on Off Licenses and shops selling alcohol

Some Irish people are starting to feel anxious as calls for restrictions on the sale of alcohol by off licenses and shops grow louder as the closure of wet pubs looks set to continue for at least another two weeks.

Padraig Cribben, the CEO of the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) has said restrictions on the sale of alcohol by off licenses on in shops should be considered if clusters of Covid-19 are being traced back to house parties and gatherings.

The VFI represents over 4,000 publicans across the country and there is obvious frustration with the government making Ireland the Ireland the only country in Europe to once again close its pubs that do not serve food completely.

These means that around half of the country’s 7,000 pubs will not reopen as was previously planned on August 31st on the advice of Ronan Glynn, Ireland’s acting chief medical officer, due to a rising weekly infection rate of 33 per 100,000 people.
