A massive discovery of mammoth skeletons in Mexico could unlock the mystery of their extinction, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Over 200 skeletons from the enormous prehistoric creatures have been unearthed at an airport construction site just outside of Mexico City. Archaeologists say that this groundbreaking discovery could reveal why the animals became extinct, which some attribute to climate change and others to humans.

Nearby the site experts found mammoth traps, used by early humans to kill the vast mammals. From the recently studied skeletons, it has been theorised that tools might have been made from mammal bones by humans.

The skeletons are dated at between 10 and 20 thousand years old, and archaeologists are allowed to continue their work until 2022 when the airport is due for completion.
