Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin is putting plans in place today for a property he’s in charge of to be made available for homeless accommodation in the centre of Dublin.

Dr Martin’s staff have already been in touch with the city’s homeless helping community in an effort to set up the facility over the coming days.

In a statement released today, Archbishop Martin said he hopes the new shelter will accommodate at least 40 people off the streets.

The Archbishop is taking action after 43-yr-old homeless man, John Corrie was found dead in a doorway on Molesworth Street opposite the Dail.

Dr Martin said he was “very deeply concerned about a deeply divided Dublin where on the one hand there is rejoicing at increased spending over the Christmas period and on the other hand where the number of those homeless and hungry is actually increasing”.

One FG supporter said “Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly is said to be beginning to tackle the problem, but is more concerned by the Irish Water debacle.”
