Army on standby in case they’re needed to help grit the roads this week as temperatures plummet

They were drafted in during the 2010 disastrous weather as heavy snowfall brought the country to a complete standstill with flights grounded, public transport stopped and businesses and schools having to close.

This week, many meteorological experts have predicted will be worse than that of 2010 with snowfall of up to 15 inches (40 cm) along the east coast.

Although council workers claim they have the matter in hand this time, unlike in January 2011 when they were to run of out grit by January 8th if there wasn’t a thaw, they say they are well prepared for the inclement weather should the beast from the east hit Ireland hard.

However, as a precautionary measure, the Irish army have been alerted to the situation and are said to be on standby again to possibly be drafted in to help grit the roads and rescue the elderly should they get snowed in.

The weather is set to break with snowfall from tonight.
