As millions get spent on migrants, families speak out about the impact of cancer care cancellations

Delayed medical visits have been described as “upsetting and frustrating” by parents of children with cancer, reports RTE.

According to a mother who spoke with RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, “it was like someone punched me” when her son’s cancer treatment did not go as expected on his first birthday.

Eight hundred child chemotherapy appointments were cancelled in 2017, according to information provided to the Dáil by Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald earlier this week.

Later on, Children’s Health Ireland refuted this, reports RTE.

According to a CHI representative, most delays or deferrals were caused by patient-specific factors and professional judgements regarding the patient’s current state of health.

Families, however, have been discussing the effects of these delays with RTÉ’s Morning Ireland and cautioning that: “they should not be happening”, reports RTE.
