As thousands of migrants get places, two Irish boys remain without Tullamore secondary school places

In Tullamore, County Offaly, two mothers have voiced their distress at the fact that their two boys must spend a third week at home due to the town’s full secondary schools, reports RTE.

The lads, who are 12 and 13 years old, fulfilled the requirements to register in the town’s two male-only schools. However, due to high demand for spots this year, they were not selected in a lottery to attend Coláiste Choilm, their top choice.

This year, there have been difficulties in several regions of the nation meeting the demand for second-level school spots.

In several towns and suburbs, more school spaces were built to accommodate the increased demand brought on by population development, reports RTE.

The moms informed RTÉ News that their kids were the only males in their class who were not accepted into Coláiste Choilm, the feeder school for which their school is used.

According to Coláiste Choilm’s admissions policy, boys who are or were the school’s brother, parent employee, or whose father or grandfather attended the school are given preference, reports RTE.

None of those descriptions apply to these two youngsters. A random selection process was used by the school to fill the remaining spots from a pool of local boys who had applied from various feeder schools.

This year, Tullamore College, the other boys-only institution in the area, is likewise overcrowded.

One mother stated, “He has really gone into himself,” reports RTE.
