The Mirror has learned that a special fundraising page has been set up to support the family of Jorden Newin, aiming to assist with the costs of bringing his body back to England for his funeral.

Mr. Newin, from Kent in southern England, was in his 30s and sustained serious injuries after an alleged attack in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, during the early hours of New Year’s Day.

He was later moved to Beaumont Hospital in north Dublin, a national center renowned for treating head injuries. However, gardai confirmed last Monday that he had passed away.

Despite being from England, Mr. Newin was in a relationship with Moira Nutt from Co Offaly at the time of his death, reports The Mirror.

A devastated Ms. Nutt made an emotional tribute to him on her Facebook page.

She said: “I can’t stop scrolling threw our texts listening to ur voice notes watching ur videos I just want you home my Jordie my heart is aching I love u so much,” reports The Mirror.

A family friend in England then set up a GoFundMe page, which Ms. Nutt shared on her Facebook as well.

“Please if everyone could share this or donate whatever you can small at all! Jordie needs to get home so his kids can say their goodbyes,” she wrote, reports The Mirror.

The GoFundMe had raised over £8,000 (around €9,200) by last night, reports The Mirror.

Organizer Karen Ferguson appealed for donations to support the Newin family following his death.

She said: “To know Jorden was to love him. He had a rare ability to light up any room he walked into, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. Jorden was a truly selfless man who always put the needs of others before his own, and our hearts are heavy with the loss of a soul who gave so much to everyone around him. Those of us lucky enough to have called him a friend or family member know just how much he gave to the people around him, especially his children. Jorden’s departure has left a void that can never be filled. Because his passing was so sudden, his family is now facing the unimaginable task of saying goodbye far sooner than anyone could have prepared for,” reports The Mirror.

She continued: “We have started this fundraiser to help honour Jorden’s memory and provide his family with the support they need to navigate the difficult days ahead. In times of such immense loss, the community’s strength is what carries us through. Any help and support you can provide—no matter how small—would be greatly appreciated. Your contributions will not only help bring Jorden home from Ireland so he can be at peace, but will also go toward ensuring he is laid to rest with the dignity and love he deserves,” reports The Mirror.

“If you are unable to donate, we ask that you please share this page with others and keep Jorden’s family in your thoughts and prayers,” reports The Mirror.

The appeal came just days after a Ukrainian national appeared in court, charged with assaulting Mr. Newin, reports The Mirror.

Yevhen Shutko, 46, appeared in Roscommon District Court on Monday morning.

The court was informed of the serious assault in Ballaghaderreen during the early hours of New Year’s Day, reports The Mirror.

Shutko, who has lived in Co Roscommon since moving to Ireland nearly two years ago, was charged with assault causing serious harm under Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act.

Garda Brendan McGrath from Castlerea Garda Station told the court that the accused was charged at 9.51 pm last Saturday, to which he responded: “It was definitely not intentional… I was defending myself,” reports The Mirror.

The court also heard that additional charges may follow, as a man has since died, and the state is awaiting directions from the DPP.

Shutko appeared at Ballaghaderreen District Court on Friday afternoon, where an independent surety and bail of €3,000 were provided to the court, reports The Mirror.
