As the last U.S and NATO forces beat an unceremonious retreat from Afghanistan after losing their 20-year long war with the Taliban, the world’s emerging dominant super-power, China, has welcomed the Islamist group for an official state visit.

China gave a warm and very public welcome to a senior Taliban delegation when foreign minister, Wang Yi, met with Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban’s co-founder and head of its political commission in the coastal city of Tianjin on Wednesday.

The United States is set to complete its withdrawal from Afghanistan by the end of August after fighting a 20-year war with the Taliban over its alleged sheltering of Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden whom the US blamed for the 9/11 terror attacks.

With the withdrawal of Western forces, the Taliban will quickly depose the U.S sponsored regime in Kabul and reinstate its strict Islamist rule in the country.
