Australia has announced plans to build a state-of-the-art navy to counter any future threats.
The country is allocating $35bn for the project, which will outfit the Royal Australian Navy with 26 modern ships, including 20 destroyers and frigates, and six Large Optionally Crewed Surface Vessels (LOSVs). The latter craft can be crewed or act autonomously as drones.
The upgraded fleet will be supported by new nuclear subs, which will be built and deployed over the next few years.
This fearsome naval force comes at a time of heightened global tensions prompted by aggressive attitudes by Russia and China.
