On Sunday, Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, usually a symbol of joy and celebration, became the scene of Australia’s worst mass shooting in nearly three decades. A father-and-son duo, identified as 50-yr-old Sajid Akram and his 24-yr-old son Naveed Akram, allegedly carried out a terrorist attack targeting a Hanukkah event attended by hundreds in the Jewish community.
The pair opened fire from a footbridge, killing at least 15 people—ranging in age from a 10-year-old girl to an 87-year-old man—and injuring over 40 others. Police shot and killed the father at the scene, while the son remains in critical condition under guard. The elder Akram was a licensed firearms owner with six registered weapons recovered from the site.
Declared an anti-semitic act of terrorism, the attack has shocked the nation. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it “pure evil,” vowing full resources for the investigation. Amid grief, stories of heroism emerged, including bystanders who intervened to save lives. Bondi, forever changed, stands in mourning.
