Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Wales, Tyler rose to international fame in the 1970s and 1980s. Her signature hits, including the Grammy-nominated “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (1983) and “Holding Out for a Hero,” became enduring classics, blending rock, pop, and country influences. With sales exceeding 20 million records worldwide, she earned a reputation as a dynamic live performer whose husky vocals defined an era of dramatic power ballads.12

Tyler had been living in Portugal. In early May 2026, she underwent emergency surgery for a perforated intestine and was placed in an induced coma. She briefly awoke in mid-June but remained critically ill in intensive care. Complications, including cardiac arrest, led to her death.
