Sweden, a country which did enforce a sever lockdown despite an outbreak of the Covid-19 virus in the country, will soon likely enjoy “herd immunity” despite a relatively low but rising death rate.

The claim was made by epidemiologists in the country tracking and studying the virus and its spread.

The Swedish government did move to close university buildings and some schools as well as public gatherings such as football matches, but restaurants, cinemas, gyms, pubs, and shops remain open and busy.

Dr Anders Tegnell, who proposed Sweden’s controversial strategy, claimed that the population of Stockholm, the epicentre of the outbreak in the Scandinavian nation, could achieve ‘”herd immunity” as early as May as over 13,000 cases of the Covid-19 virus in the country were confirmed last week.

Referring the death rate Mr Tegnell said, “It is not a failure for the overall strategy, but it is a failure to protect our elderly who live in care homes.”

This news comes as several European countries and other Western Nations such as the United States prepare to gradually lift the lockdown restrictions but in Ireland Minister for Health Simon Harris has warned that social distancing and other restrictions may remain until a vaccine for Coronavirus is produced.
