The Australian government has received a backlash of criticism after they issued a ludicrous travel warning to its tourists thinking of making the trip to Ireland.
According to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs Ireland is currently experiencing high tensions between unionists and republicans because of the Centenary of the Easter Rising. The Australian government claim that tensions between dissident republicans and unionists have significantly increased in the lead up to the centenary of the Easter Rising.
It’s government advise tourists intending on visiting the Emerald Isle to avoid all protests and demonstrations, including those associated with Northern Ireland, as they may turn violent. “Instances of civil disorder can rapidly escalate into violence and you should avoid them wherever possible.”
The smartraveller.gov.au website also claims that Ireland has a history of serious, violent crime and they recommend that those staying here should avoid secluded parks and unlit areas. They also claim petty crime is a common occurrence in city areas and on public transport, so tourists should keep their valuables close by.
Meanwhile the government also states that car theft and break-ins are high in the nations capital Dublin, and tourist locations, with rental cars being targeted the most.
