Bad news for commuters as Bus Eireann strike could also cause a number of Irish Rail depots to close

There could be bad news for thousands of commuters next week as Irish Rail have said a number of it’s depots could be forced to close as part of the Bus Éireann strike.

The closures which will effect many workers on their daily commute comes as Irish Rail staff confirmed they will not cross picket lines at shared locations across the country.

The scheduled strike action which is due to begin on Monday will see a high number of bus services out of operation including those shared with Irish Rail.

Speaking about the issue Dermot O’Leary of the National Bus and Rail Union has claimed the strike will disrupt more than just Bus Éireann customers.

Mr O’Leary told reporters: “There are a number of shared locations in this country where Bus Eireann have depots that they share with irish Rail and a large number of people have been telling us that they are going to have extreme difficulty passing pickets to depots next Monday.”

“And that’s a reality, it’s unfortunate, but that’s it. It’s called a moral compass and people understand that when there’s a picket on the gate, it’s very difficult for any workers, certainly ours, to pass it.”

The latest bout of strike action to hit the Irish commuter has come after a dispute erupted between management and staff at Bus Eireann over reduced pay and hours.
