Bank customers are warned about a new ‘number spoofing’ scam currently doing the rounds in Ireland.
It works like this: The customer receives a phone call that seemingly originates in their bank, as the numbers may be almost identical. This is accomplished by a certain device that can copy any phone number.
The scammers then ask the person to transfer money over the phone to a ‘secure’ account, which of course belongs to the fraudster.
Customers are advised to always be suspicious of unsolicited calls from strangers asking for banking details or to transfer money over the phone.
