Bank of Ireland issues warning of new ‘live chat’ scam

Bank of Ireland has warned of a new scam in which fraudsters trick customers into granting remote access to their computers and bank accounts, reports RTE.

The customer receives a call from someone claiming to be from Bank of Ireland and is asked to log in to their online banking.

The scammer then asks the customer to go to another new website address, claiming it is a live chat service, or to check the customer’s computer.

However, in reality, this allows the fraudster to remotely access the customer’s computer.

Bank of Ireland is advising customers to hang up if they receive a call from someone asking them to go to a website or click on a link that has been sent to them, reports RTE.

The bank said fraudsters mainly target professional bank customers and reports of this type of fraud to its fraud hotline are increasing daily.

Bank of Ireland is launching a major nationwide fraud awareness campaign to warn its customers about the prevalence of fraud.

A survey found that 96% of consumers believe they will be attacked in the next six months, and 82% say they will be attacked at least once a month.

“This new scam is of particular concern as fraudsters are convincing people to allow access to their PCs via a fake ‘live chat’, where they can access business customers’ online banking, and other personal files and information,” said Nicola Sadlier, Head of Fraud at Bank of Ireland, reports RTE.
