Batten down the hatches: People across the country are being warned to keep their doors closed as the cold weather will cause rodent infestation

People are being advised to keep their doors and windows shut during the upcoming cold snap, the call comes from a leading pest control company who say homes across the country are being subjected to rodent infestations.

The company named Rentokil has said they have seen a rise in calls since September citing the cold weather as the main cause of rodents entering the home. The company say they have seen a 34% increase in people calling for their service this year compared to last year. The warning for people to shut up shop comes as a spokesperson for the company Dr Colm Moore explained that rodents infestations are becoming more popular because they have a high mortality rate in the wild and are very susceptible to cold temperatures and depletion of food resources normally associated with the onset of winter.

The call for homeowners to be extra vigilant comes after Met Eireann issued a warning that temperatures are set to plummet this weekend, with widespread frost expected across the country. Dr. Moore, further explained: “During winter months, rodents like to base themselves somewhere warm, quiet and close to a source of food. “There are a number of steps that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of rodents finding sanctuary in your home over the Christmas period and beyond. “Simple steps like sealing holes around your doors can make all the difference.”
