Ukrainian units have reportedly retaken four villages within hours of launching a counter-offensive.
The villages lie south of the city of Kherson, the main target of the Ukrainian thrust.
The operation began with concentrated artillery barrages on both frontline Russian positions and targets in the rear. Ukraine focused its artillery fire on ammunition depots to weaken Russia’s ability to resupply front-line units.
The ground assault developed along the Pravdyne sector, where Ukraine’s shock troops quickly overran and routed separatist infantry units. Sources say that many Russians were killed or captured, and scores of vehicles disabled or destroyed.
According to battle reports, Ukraine managed to retake Pravdyne itself, plus three other villages, Nova Dmytrivka, Arkhanhel’s’ke, and Tomyna Balka.
