A protest staged by beef farmers in Cavan earlier today ended with chaotic scenes, resulting in one arrest and one casualty taken to hospital.
A number of people from the local beef farming community gathered outside Liffey Meats, a meat processing plant, in the village of Ballyjamesduff. The farmers met to raise their concerns about the price they get for their cattle.
The gathering soon turned nasty, prompting Gardai to intervene.
There are calls for the Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed, to mediate and find a resolution for the farmers’ plight.
