Belfast zoo has lost one of its most famous members – a 60-year-old gorilla called Delilah.

According to RTE, the gorilla had been at the zoo for 32 years and enjoyed the care and attention of a devoted team of carers who made sure that any illness or issue was dealt with immediately. Delilah was well known for playing with the younger gorillas and had no problem in keeping up with them.

She suffered from a chest infection recently and the decision was taken to put her to sleep so that she would not suffer any pain or discomfort.

The zoo released a statement saying that due to Delilah’s advanced age, they knew that her life was coming to an end but that they were deeply saddened to lose her.
