Security forces in Brussels have today been put on high alert due to a heightened risk of terrorist attacks.

Heavily armed personnel are patrolling key locations in the city, and subway stations have been closed after the government warned of an impending threat of a Paris-style massacre.

Prime minister Charles Michel said the decision to raise the threat alert was “based on quite precise information about the risk of an attack like the one that happened in Paris … where several individuals with arms and explosives launch actions, perhaps even in several places at the same time”.

The death toll from the Paris attacks rose yesterday to 130, after a severely injured victim lost the fight for life.

At least one suspect remains at large, possibly in Belgium.
