Using President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit as a springboard, US President Joe Biden offered more than $8 billion in military aid for Ukraine to help the nation “win this war” against Russia, reports RTE.

The first delivery of the Joint Standoff Weapon, a precision-guided glide bomb with a range of up to 130 km, is part of the assistance.

With the medium-range missile, Ukraine can now hit Russian soldiers at safer ranges and has significantly improved its arsenal of weaponry. Dropped by fighter planes, the bomb has a great accuracy in hitting objectives.

According to a US official, Mr. Biden would not declare that Washington would permit Ukraine to employ US missiles to strike targets farther inside Russia, reports RTE.

According to a statement from Mr. Biden, the US has made supporting Ukraine, which Russia invaded in February 2022, a major priority.

“That is why, today, I am announcing a surge in security assistance for Ukraine and a series of additional actions to help Ukraine win this war,” said Mr Biden, who leaves office in January, reports RTE.

The majority of the $5.5 billion in extra aid must be disbursed before the financing authorisation expires on Monday, the last day of the US fiscal year. Under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, an additional $2.4 billion is available for the administration to purchase weapons for Ukraine from private businesses instead of removing them from US stockpiles.

In addition to strengthening Ukraine’s defence industrial base and assisting with its upkeep, this will provide the country more air defence, unmanned aerial systems, and air-to-ground weapons, reports RTE.

The US Defence Department will repair and give Ukraine another Patriot air defence battery and more Patriot missiles, according to the president’s proposal.

Mr. Biden gave the Pentagon orders to train more Ukrainian F-16 pilots, including sponsoring the training of eighteen more pilots the next year, reports RTE.

In order to counter Russian money laundering and sanctions evasion, the US will take action to interfere with what Mr. Biden described as “a global cryptocurrency network, in coordination with international partners.”

In order to coordinate the actions of almost 50 nations that assist Ukraine, Mr. Biden said that he will call a summit of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group leaders in Germany the following month, reports RTE.
