The controversial left-wing politician George Galloway declared “this is for Gaza” after winning the Rochdale by-election in England, reports RTE.
With almost 12,000 votes, or over 40% of the total, Mr. Galloway—who has now served as an MP for three separate parties—won the by-election. These parties include Labour, the Respect Party, and the Workers’ Party of Britain.
Mr. Galloway addressed Palestine first in his victory speech, stating, “Keir Starmer, this is for Gaza.”
“You have paid, and you will pay, a high price for the role that you have played in enabling, encouraging and covering for the catastrophe presently going on in occupied Palestine in the Gaza Strip,” reports RTE.
In addition, Mr. Galloway promised to support the town’s football team, promote Primark to the area, and try to enhance the health care system.
He went on to say that at the May local elections, he would “put the councillors in Rochdale on notice” that he planned to build a “grand alliance” to “clean the town hall up.”
With 39.7% of the vote, his majority of 5,697 votes was 18.3% of the total, somewhat greater than the two most recent by-elections in Wellingborough and Kingswood, reports RTE.
