A man has been charged with vehicular assault after two female Black Lives Matter protestors were struck by his car while holding a demonstration on the I-5 motorway in Seattle.
One of the women, 24-year-old Summer White, died of her injuries after being hit at high speed by Dawit Kelete at around 1:40AM local time on Saturday the 4th of July.
Another woman who was with White suffered severe and potentially life altering injuries.
Both the women who were attending the Black Lives Matter protest on the motorway were white while the driver of the car that struck them was himself black, a tragically ironic twist that has not been lost on online commentators.
Following the incident, some media pundits, politicians and celebrities quickly jumped to the conclusion that is was a deliberate attack on BLM protestors by a right-wing individual or white supremacist. A flurry of panicked deletions followed the news that the assailant was in fact black.
Meanwhile, very little sympathy has been expressed for the dead white woman or her bereaved family from celebrities or Democrat politicians something people have been quick to note would not have been the case had her killed been white or someone opposed to BLM.
Police have not yet determined Kelete’s motive for hitting the two women, but he was spotted on camera dodging cars positioned to protect the protestors and a sobriety test found he had not recently consumed drugs or alcohol before the attack.
His bail has been set at $1.2 million
