A 25-yr-old woman has been charged over a bomb intercepted in a car in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, on Wednesday.
Isobella Perrie Sullivan, a law student living at Abbeylands Park in Clane, County Kildare, faced the charge of possessing explosives at a special sitting of Trim District Court this evening.
A detective from the Garda Special Detective Unit outlined the arrest, charge and caution that took place at Dundalk Garda Station earlier today. He explained that officers stopped Ms Perrie Sullivan in Carrickmacross on Wednesday and searched the vehicle she was driving. Inside a bag in the rear of the car they discovered a device containing a timing power unit, a detonator and a substance believed to be Semtex.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialists from the Defence Forces were called in and confirmed the device was viable. The detective noted that the maximum sentence for the offence is 14 years and opposed bail because of the seriousness of the matter.
Her solicitor, Gavin Booth of Phoenix Law, told the court that Ms Perrie Sullivan lives with her father in County Kildare and is studying to become a barrister.
Judge Raymond Finnegan granted bail on condition that she provides a €15,000 independent surety, surrenders her passport, supplies her phone number to gardaÃ, signs on daily at Naas Garda Station and observes a curfew between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
She was remanded in custody with consent to bail. The bail application is due to be heard at Monaghan District Court on Monday.
