The pro-vice-Chancellor of England’s prestigious Cambridge University has said that there is lack of black students applying to the Institution because the city of Cambridge does not have many Afro-Caribbean hairdressers.

Professor Graham Virgo said the surprising finds came to light after a research study was conducted asking, they question – what deters black students from considering the institution- for study.

Professor Virgo made the announcement at event held at King’s College, Cambridge.

Undergraduates at the university and sixth-form students were interviewed for the research as the Institution prepares a new campaign to encourage more black students to apply. Research listed reasons why students of African heritage had not applied and number three on the list was lack of Afro-Caribbean hairdressers.

The campaign was launched after it was revealed that just a hand full of students of African heritage had been admitted to the University in past year.
