Blindsided: European leaders panic and demand a say in US talks to end Russia’s war in Ukraine

After Moscow and Washington claimed that Europe had no place in the discussions to end the crisis in Ukraine, European leaders have urged that their governments be able to influence the talks, reports Breaking News.

Following a US diplomatic blitz on Ukraine that has rocked a once-solid alliance, leaders of Germany, the UK, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, NATO, and the European Union convened for emergency talks on Europe’s security dilemma at the Elysee Palace in Paris for over three hours.

In addition to calling for US support, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said that he is prepared to discuss sending British military to Ukraine along with others “if there is a lasting peace agreement,” reports Breaking News.

After the meeting, he declared, “There must be a US backstop, because a US security guarantee is the only way to effectively deter Russia from attacking Ukraine again.” While some EU countries are against sending soldiers, many are still unsure.

During their first trip to Europe this week, senior US officials gave the impression that Washington was prepared to embrace the Kremlin while ignoring many of its longstanding European friends, reports Breaking News.

Donald Trump’s special envoy for Russia and Ukraine, General Keith Kellogg, stated that he did not believe it was “reasonable and feasible to have everybody sitting at the table.”

“We know how that can turn out and that has been our point, is keeping it clean and fast as we can,” he told reporters in Brussels, where he briefed the 31 US allies in Nato, along with EU officials, before heading to Kyiv for talks on Wednesday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, reports Breaking News.

Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, was likewise dismissive of Europe’s involvement. When he landed in Saudi Arabia for meetings with US officials, he remarked, “I don’t know what they have to do at the negotiations table.”

In a series of remarks this week, US vice president JD Vance and defence secretary Pete Hegseth questioned Europe’s security pledges and core democratic values, reports Breaking News.

Their reprimands and threats of non-cooperation in the face of military peril, according to French President Emmanuel Macron, who has long advocated for a more robust European defence, seemed like a shock to the system.

The pivotal moment occurred when Mr. Trump chose to reverse decades of US policy by negotiating with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an attempt to put an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, reports Breaking News.
