Next Monday the Garda Association of Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) will organize a day of action in line with Garda management on the proposed new shifts, reports RTE.

The association met today in Athlone for a special delegate convention, only the second time in its 45-year history.

In a statement, it said 100 members would stage a protest march to Garda headquarters next Monday and hand over a letter to Garda management stating their concerns.

It said this was the first phase of an agreed two-part strategy, with the initial focus for the next four weeks being on the health, safety and well-being of AGSI members.

In March 2020 members moved overnight to a new roster to police the Covid-19 pandemic and undertakings by the Garda Commissioner that we would return to our normal working patterns have not been honoured,” AGSI general secretary Antoinette Cunningham said, reports RTE.

The first AGSI ‘Action Day’ will take place on 13 March when 100 AGSI members representing each of their 31 branches and the National Executive will march to Garda Headquarters and hand over a letter to Garda Commissioner Drew Harris outlining their concerns.

If the concerns raised are not addressed, a second ‘Action Day’ will proceed.

A proposal for an agreement on working hours and shifts was agreed to by Garda management, the Superintendents’ Union and the Chief Superintendents’ Union, however the proposal was rejected by the GRA and the AGSI, reports RTE.

“The commissioner remains committed to reaching a solution as soon as possible, in order to give colleagues certainty in their working lives going forward,” according to a Garda statement, reports RTE.
