This incident is the second fatal drowning in Cork in recent weeks. Another man in his 30s, Luke Hyde, died in the River Lee in the city centre last month, reports The Mirror.
On April 30, Luke had gone swimming with a friend near Pope’s Quay. They attempted to cross the river to Kyrl’s Quay, but both got into trouble. While his friend made it across safely, Luke was carried away by the current.
Despite brave attempts by his friend to save him, and support from responding GardaÃ, Luke sadly did not survive.
Commenting on the incident on Wednesday night, a Garda spokesperson stated: “Gardaà and emergency services attended the scene of a drowning incident that occurred in a river at Dysart, Dromagh, Mallow, Co. Cork this evening Wednesday 21st May, 2025 at approximately 7pm. One male, aged in his 30s was recovered from the water by the fire service and his body will be removed to Cork University Hospital Mortuary where a post mortem will take place in due course.
