Bottle of wine could soon cost a minimum of €8 as Health Minister is pushing to introduce new legislation to de-glamourise’ drinking in Ireland

If you happen to be partial to a cheap bottle of wine you might be out of luck, as you could soon be paying more for your bottle of plonk after the Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has revealed plans to introduce a new legislation that would see the Irish consumer paying a minimum price of €8 for a bottle of wine.

The new legislation will also see shops and off licences being unable to sell cans of beer for no less than €2. The new measures are being brought in as Minister Varadkar is trying to ‘de-glamourise’ drinking in Ireland. Meanwhile sports stadiums will no longer be able to place adverts for alcohol on the side of the pitches.

The new legislation will also see warning labels being placed on bottles and cans and introduce a watershed for the advertising of alcohol on TV and radio. It is highly understood Mr Varadkar is hoping to bring the new legislation before the Dáil in the coming weeks.
