Though there is a welcome respite in the heavy rainfall of recent weeks, a wintery snap is expected to take hold over the weekend and into the early days of next week.
Friday evening will begin dry, but some heavy showers will fall on parts of Munster and Leinster during the night. Temperatures will drop to -2C during the night.
Saturday and Sunday will remain cold, with nighttime temperatures dropping to about -5C. Some light snowfalls are expected on high ground.
The forecast for next week is for dry but cold weather, with sharp or severe frost formation on most nights.
