Brave lady Aoife Farrelly throws her anonymity out the window so that her brother Cian, who raped her, could be named publicly

A man who raped and sexually abused his younger sister as a teenager has been sentenced to three years in prison after the final 18 months were suspended.

According to RTE, the judge said Cian Farrelly, 30, from Oldcastle in County Meath, ruined the life of his sister Aoife, now 21.

The abuse took place between December 2007 and May 2009, when she was seven and eight years old.

Ms Farrelly waived her anonymity because she said her brother silenced her for too long. The national broadcaster reports that she said she wanted other victims of such abuse to see her face and know they could come forward.

Between 2007 and 2009, he repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted her. The woman’s parents were informed and he told them that abuse had stopped but Ms Farrelly herself reported him to the Gardaí in 2020.

Farrelly pleaded guilty and Judge Paul McDermott presented the evidence today and was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison with the final 18 months suspended.

The brave young lady said she can now go forward and start living the rest of her life.
