BREAKING: Arlene Foster to step down as DUP leader and Northern Ireland’s First Minister

Arlene Foster has confirmed that she will step down from her role as DUP leader and Northern Ireland’s First Minister.

In an announcement Foster confirmed that she will step down as DUP leader at the end of May and will leave her role as First Minister at the end of June.

In a statement Foster said: “It has been the privilege of my life to serve the people of Northern Ireland as their First Minister and to represent my home constituency of Fermanagh/South Tyrone.”

“I first entered the Assembly in 2003 and undoubtedly the journey of the last eighteen years has been memorable.

“There are many people who have helped and supported me throughout that period and I will always be grateful for the kindness and support shown to me by them.”

Foster’s decision comes after it was reported on Tuesday that a number of members in the DUP had signed a letter calling for leadership change declaring no confidence in the current party leader.
