Graz, Austria’s second-largest city, was rocked by a devastating school shooting today, at BORG Dreierschützengasse, a secondary school in the northwest of the city. At approximately 10:00 AM local time, a lone gunman, identified as a 22-year-old former student, opened fire in two classrooms, killing at least seven students and one adult. The shooter, reportedly a victim of bullying, was found dead in a school restroom, believed to have taken his own life. Up to 30 people were injured, with four in critical condition, according to local media reports.
Austrian police, including the elite Cobra tactical unit, responded swiftly, evacuating the school and securing the area by 11:30 AM. Emergency services treated the wounded at nearby hospitals and a concert hall, with 158 paramedics and 65 emergency vehicles deployed. Graz Mayor Elke Kahr called the incident a “terrible tragedy,” and Chancellor Christian Stocker canceled all appointments in response. The attack, one of Austria’s worst mass shootings, occurred days before the 10th anniversary of a 2015 vehicle attack in Graz that killed three. Authorities are investigating, with reports suggesting the shooter used a legally owned pistol and shotgun. The community remains in shock as it grapples with the profound loss.
