BREAKING: BBC issues formal apology to Trump over edited January 6 speech but rejects $1 billion lawsuit demand

In a dramatic escalation of transatlantic media tensions, the BBC has issued a formal apology to U.S. President Donald Trump for selectively editing his January 6, 2021, speech in a Panorama documentary, while firmly rejecting his $1 billion defamation lawsuit threat.

The controversy erupted over a clip in the 2024 broadcast “Trump: A Second Chance?” that spliced phrases from Trump’s Ellipse rally address, creating the impression he directly incited violence at the Capitol. The edit omitted key context, including calls for peaceful protest, and aired without clear disclosure, prompting over 500 viewer complaints.

BBC Chair Samir Shah described it as an “error of judgment” aimed at condensing the speech’s impact on supporters, but admitted it misled audiences. “The BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited,” a spokesperson stated, confirming the documentary’s permanent withdrawal from iPlayer.

Trump’s legal team, in a Sunday letter, accused the broadcaster of “intentional deceit” to sway elections, demanding retraction, apology, and compensation by November 14. The BBC’s response, including Shah’s personal letter to the White House, offers regret but no financial payout, asserting no defamation grounds exist.

The scandal has already claimed casualties: BBC Director General Tim Davie and News Chief Deborah Turness resigned Sunday amid a leaked memo alleging broader biases in U.S. coverage. Supporters decry a right-wing “campaign” against the public broadcaster, while critics hail the apology as overdue accountability.

As Trump, known for litigious flair, mulls further action, the feud underscores deepening U.S.-UK media rifts in the post-election era.
