The boxing world is in mourning following the shocking death of former two-weight world champion Ricky Hatton, who was discovered deceased at his home in Manchester early this morning. Hatton, born Richard John Hatton on October 6, 1978, rose to prominence in the late 1990s as a light-welterweight and welterweight powerhouse. With a professional record of 45 wins, five losses, and two draws, he captured the IBF, IBO, and WBA light-welterweight titles before moving up to welterweight, where he claimed the WBA and IBF crowns. His high-profile bouts against legends like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao drew massive crowds, particularly from his adoring Manchester support, earning him the nickname “The Hitman.”

Retiring in 2012 after a storied career, Hatton transitioned into promotion and training, mentoring young fighters including his own son, Campbell Hatton, who recently retired from the sport at 24. However, Hatton’s post-retirement life was marked by personal struggles, including battles with depression and substance abuse. In candid interviews, he openly discussed multiple suicide attempts, crediting therapy and family support for his recovery. As recently as June 2025, Hatton advocated for better mental health resources in boxing, sharing his story to help others.

Tributes have poured in from across the sporting world. Former rival and friend Amir Khan posted on social media: “Devastated to hear about Ricky. He was a true warrior inside and outside the ring. Rest in peace, brother.” Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn described Hatton as “a national treasure whose passion for the sport inspired generations.” British boxing authorities have already announced plans for a memorial event to honor his legacy.

Hatton’s death comes amid a planned exhibition comeback bout scheduled for December 2025 against Dubai’s Eisa Al Dah, which has now been canceled. The 2007 MBE recipient leaves behind his son Campbell, ex-partner Claire, and a legacy that transcended the ropes.

Fans and fellow fighters are encouraged to share memories and condolences via official boxing channels as the community grapples with this profound loss.
