A 14-yr-old boy was killed and four others were injured in a knife attack in Villach, southern Austria, on Saturday afternoon, according to police. The suspect, a 23-year-old Syrian asylum seeker, was arrested shortly after the incident.
Police spokesman Rainer Dionisio told AFP that the attacker randomly targeted passers-by with a knife around 4 p.m. local time (3 p.m. Irish time) in the city center of Villach, the capital of Carinthia province. The 14-year-old victim succumbed to his injuries, while two men sustained serious injuries and two others were lightly hurt.
A food delivery rider witnessed the attack and intervened by ramming his vehicle into the suspect, who suffered minor injuries and was apprehended immediately, Dionisio said. Preliminary information indicates the suspect holds a valid residence permit and has no prior criminal record.
The victims’ ages range from 14 to 32, with the youngest being the deceased boy. This attack follows a car-ramming incident in Munich, Germany, just two days prior.
