Former Kilkenny hurler DJ Carey has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison for defrauding 22 people of nearly €400,000 by falsely claiming he had cancer and required funds for treatment.
He pleaded guilty in July to 10 counts of deception by inducing payments for non-existent cancer care. The court also took into account eight similar offences and two counts involving a forged letter from a Seattle hospital.
Just over €44,000 has been repaid, reports RTE.
Carey was remanded in custody last Friday following victim impact statements from two individuals. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court Judge Martin Nolan described the fraud as unimaginably reprehensible, noting Carey had exploited people’s goodwill.
The judge stated a custodial sentence was inevitable and today DJ Carey starts that 5 and a half year sentence.
