A massive fire erupted at an electrical substation near Heathrow Airport in West London, leading to widespread power outages and the complete shutdown of the airport, as reported by Sky News. The blaze broke out late Thursday evening on Nestles Avenue in Hayes, triggering a significant emergency response as flames and thick smoke engulfed the site.

The London Fire Brigade deployed 10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters to battle the intense fire, which lit up the night sky and caused alarm among nearby residents. Videos shared online showed bright orange flames and heavy smoke pouring from the substation, with some locals reporting loud explosions prior to the outbreak. Due to the severity of the incident, Heathrow Airport has been shut down until 11:59 PM on March 21, 2025, with passengers advised not to travel to the airport until operations resume.

National Grid confirmed that the fire disrupted power to approximately 16,000 properties in West London, including homes and businesses. Engineers are on-site assessing the damage and working to restore electricity, though no timeline for full recovery has been provided. The power outage directly impacted Heathrow, forcing the closure to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson described the operation as complex due to the electrical infrastructure involved but noted that crews were making headway in containing the blaze. Police established a 100-meter cordon around the site, evacuating around 20 people from nearby properties and urging the public to avoid the area.

Posts on X reflected local frustration, with reports of blackouts, flickering lights, and disrupted travel plans as the airport closure rippled through the region. Sky News indicates that the cause of the fire remains under investigation, with authorities yet to pinpoint what sparked the incident.
