The British acting world is in mourning following the death of Tony Caunter, best known for his role as car salesman Roy Evans in the BBC soap *EastEnders*. The 88-year-old actor died peacefully on October 13, just eight days after the passing of his wife of 63 years, Frances “Fran” Wallace, his family announced today.
In a heartfelt statement to the PA news agency, Caunter’s loved ones said: “It is with enormous sadness that we bring the curtain down on our wonderful and hugely loved father, Tony Caunter, who died peacefully yesterday evening… Dad was 88 years old. After a long and fulfilling life on and off screen and stage, Tony leaves a daughter and three sons, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.”
Caunter portrayed the hapless yet endearing Roy Evans in *EastEnders* from 1994 to 2003, a character forever etched in viewers’ memories for his tumultuous marriage to Pat Butcher and endless family dramas. Roy’s storyline peaked with his tragic death from a heart attack in 2003, but Caunter’s off-screen warmth endeared him to fans and colleagues alike.
The BBC soap issued a tribute: “It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Tony Caunter. He brought heart and humour to Roy Evans, making him a firm favourite.”
Fans flooded social media with memories. “Roy was always a favourite of mine, and Tony an excellent actor,” one wrote on X. Another added: “Sad news… He was in a great era of the show.”
Caunter’s career spanned decades, including roles in *The Bill*, *Doctor Who*, and stage productions. His death, so soon after Fran’s, underscores a profound personal loss amid his professional legacy.
