An Garda Síochána’s counter-terror unit is investigating a serious threat made against Tánaiste Simon Harris and his children, posted on a social media platform on Saturday night. The “extremely grave” threats specifically targeted Harris’s family, prompting immediate action from the Special Detective Unit (SDU), which focuses on national security and violent political extremism.
The threats are the latest in a series of incidents targeting the Fine Gael politician, including a hoax bomb threat at his Wicklow home in June 2024 and protests by masked individuals outside his residence. Gardaí are liaising with the social media company to identify the individual responsible, and the investigation is being treated with utmost seriousness.
A spokesperson for Harris declined to comment on the matter. The Tánaiste has previously stated that such intimidation is unacceptable and should not be normalized, emphasizing that politicians’ families and homes should be off-limits.
