The Catholic Church in Ireland is encouraging parishioners who stopped attending Mass during the Covid-19 pandemic to return. It welcomes those who grew accustomed to online Masses, fell out of the habit, or prioritized other activities. All Catholic bishops support the initiative, led by Bishop Denis Nulty.
In his pastoral message, “Why Sunday Matters,” delivered at Carlow Cathedral, he emphasised Sunday’s central role in Christian life, providing a weekly “rhythm.” He described the pandemic as a unique moment that highlighted the Eucharist’s importance, noting how its absence disrupted worship and parish sacramental life.
Some have not returned, and some never connected, Bishop Nulty said, inviting everyone across Ireland’s dioceses and parishes to re-join Sunday worship. The initiative, while bishop-led, was shaped by nearly two years of contributions from individuals and groups.
