An elderly woman in her early 70s died after a bee swarm attack while tending to beehives with her husband in Ballycastle, Co Mayo, around 5pm Monday.
She suffered multiple stings, fell ill at the scene, and passed away at Sligo University Hospital despite assistance from the Rescue 118 Irish Coast Guard helicopter.
Several others were also stung while trying to fend off the bees, with one person treated at Castlebar hospital and later discharged. The woman, from north Mayo, was collecting honey when the incident occurred.
A post-mortem will determine the cause of death, and a file will be prepared for the local coroner.
