Ireland has seen wildly changing weather throughout August, swinging between intense heatwave conditions earlier in the month to several days of heavy downpours, strong winds, and thunderstorms, reports The Mirror.
As we move into September, it appears the unpredictable trend may continue, with Met Éireann forecasting a month of unsettled weather. September generally marks a shift from the warmth of summer to the cooler days of autumn. Rainfall becomes more common, winds grow stronger, and low-pressure systems arriving from the Atlantic bring periods of wet and blustery weather.
There will still be sunny intervals, but according to the outlook, these will likely be brief glimpses of brightness in an otherwise stormy month, reports The Mirror.
Met Éireann has now published its full forecast for September, indicating the unsettled conditions from August could carry over. Although the extreme heat may not return, Ireland is set to experience a mixture of rain and dry spells, with sunshine making brief appearances amid more turbulent weather.
In the first week, running from Monday, September 1 to Sunday, September 7, the forecast reads: “Low pressure is set to continue dominating our weather, bringing in unsettled conditions from the Atlantic. It will be wetter than average across the country for the time of year, with the most rainfall forecast for the southwest, west and northwest. Temperatures will be average for the time of year,” reports The Mirror.
During week two, from Monday, September 8 to Sunday, September 14, conditions may improve slightly: “With confidence becoming lower for week 2, there is a small signal for mean sea level pressure to increase. Rainfall amounts are forecast to be below average for the time of year, while temperatures are forecast to be close to average or slightly above.”
For the period of Monday, September 15 to Sunday, September 21, the forecast becomes less certain: “While uncertainty is increasing in the forecast for week 3, it’s a similar story to the previous week with a slight signal for high pressure to have more of an influence. Rainfall amounts are expected to be average for the time of year, although possibly slightly below average in the west, northwest and north. Temperatures are forecast to be average or very slightly above for the time of year,” reports The Mirror.
Finally, for the fourth week, Monday, September 22 to Sunday, September 28, Met Éireann commented: “While forecast confidence is low for week 4, there is a slight signal for low pressure to dominate. Rainfall amounts are forecast to be slightly higher than average while temperatures are forecast to be average or very slightly above,” reports The Mirror.
The national meteorological agency issues extended forecasts that it says “can at times provide an insight into weather patterns for the month ahead” but cautions they “should not be used for specific planning purposes” as they “have generally low skill” because “forecasts beyond one week become increasingly uncertain due to the chaotic nature of the atmosphere”, reports The Mirror.
