BREAKING: Gardai say the shooter at Carlow shopping centre appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound

Gardai in Carlow say that the man who died at the scene of a shooting incident at a shopping appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident unfolded around 6:15pm on Sunday evening when a man walked into Tesco at the shopping and centre and, as described by locals, “started shooting”.

People fled for their lives in a very panicked situation, before the man appears to have taken his own life outside the shopping centre prior to armed gardai making it to the scene.

EARLIER:

Locals are saying that a man walked into the Tesco shop in the Fairgreen shopping centre in Carlow and “just started shooting”.

People are saying that the man had a “large gun” and just “started unloading”. They’re saying that he reloaded at least once.

Locals in Carlow say that they literally ran for their lives as gunshots unloaded from a shooter in the Fairgreen shopping centre in Carlow.

Unconfirmed reports from locals in Carlow are claiming that the shooter at the shopping centre incident was a farmer.

They say that they had a loaded shotgun which he shot a number of times and then reloaded.

At least one child has been shot in the leg.

Again, these are unconfirmed reports and what The Liberal is being told by locals in Carlow.

EARLIER:

A number of armed gardai, including the bomb disposal unit are at the scene of a shooter in Carlow after suspicious objects were found on his body.

It’s understood at this stage that a 9-yr-old girl was injured in the leg during the incident.

A man is dead following a shooting incident in Co Carlow this evening.

A child, believed at this stage to be a 9-yr-old girl, was also badly injured in the incident.

It’s not known at this point whether the child was targeted or caught up in the crossfire.

It’s believed that the man shot several shots, people panicked and ran from the scene.

Gardai raced to the scene and the shopping centre was immediately evacuated.

It’s not yet confirmed, but it’s believed that the man shot himself prior to gardai confronting him.

Locals are claiming that the man had a number of suspicious items strapped to his body – and gardai have now called in the Defence Forces bomb squad to examine the man’s body at the scene.

Anyone with footage is asked to share it with gardai as the investigation begins.
